Classwork and Homework
In class, students will do some work in groups of four, some in pairs within those groups, and some individually. It is extremely important for each student to participate in class, especially in doing lab work. Each student will be responsible for maintaining his or her own science notebook. In general, students will do all lab work and most written work in class, rather than at home. If students do have a homework assignment or are making up work, they can bring their notebooks home or do the assignment on paper and attach it into their lab notebooks later.
Students who have been absent should check in with me at the beginning of class if possible. Students are generally excused from assignments if their absence was excused and if they missed a significant amount of lab work.

Assessments
Assessments will include student notebooks, quizzes, projects, and teacher observations. I will be using the SEPUP system to assess students in the areas listed below, but note that not all areas will be weighted equally in the grade and the weighting will probably change as the school year goes on.
Students will receive scores of 0-4 on each assessment. The specifics of scoring (available on request) will vary with the assignment, but this is the general meaning of each score:
4 Above and beyond
3 Complete and correct
2 Almost there (some omissions or errors)
1 On your way (significant problems, but some effort)
0 Missing or irrelevant
It is much more important to get scores of 3 consistently than to get a mix of 4s and 2s.
Online grade information is updated every few weeks.

Grades on Synergy
The Synergy online grading program (which you can view through ParentVue and StudentVue) allows me to enter the 0-4 scores described above, and keeps track of each student's average score. (Sometimes this shows up in small print near the top of the viewing window.) It assigns each average a rating of PRO (proficient), DEV (developing), or DNM (does not meet). At the end of each quarter, I will use the student's average score to hand-enter a letter grade, which will show up on the printed report card that will show up at home.
These are the letter grades corresponding to each average score and rating:
2.7 and up (PRO): A
2.0 and up (DEV): B
1.7 and up (DEV): C
1.0 and up (DNM): D
below 1.0 (DNM): F
Students can bring notebooks home to add missing work (but must tell Ms. Wright when they do).
